FUTURE GOALS

Since I was little, I have always been asking questions about the world around me. My dad likes to remind me every so often of my childhood full of questions. Usually he does this around the time I am asking him more questions about the world as an adult. My questions and curiosities never seem to end! I believe it is this quality that is so deeply ingrained into who I am that subconsciously led me to the world of science education. My need for knowledge has never waned, starting from kindergarten and now graduating this spring with my master’s degree. The question on my mind currently is; What is my next learning journey? With graduation on the horizon, these thoughts have been weighing heavily on my mind. The possibilities are endless! After having what I study in school prescribed to me, I am looking forward to pursuing goals and knowledge that I am passionate about. These areas are educational leadership, online education, and technology integration.

Through the Master’s of Arts in Educational Technology (MAET), I have found a deep love for technology integration in the classroom. When done thoughtfully, the benefits it can provide for students, teachers, and schools are well worth the growing pains it takes to get everyone on board. To further my knowledge of technology integration, I have already taken the steps to get my Level 1 and Level 2 Google Educator certification. However, I want to be able to share my passion for technology integration with more than just my students and my school. One of my professional goals for the future is to become a Google Certified Trainer. By becoming a certified trainer, I could teach other educators about google products and how they could transform their classroom as much or as little as they want to. Not only would I be able to bring the knowledge and power of technology integration to others, I would have to continually push myself to be up to date on all google products and create innovative ways for teachers to use these products in their classrooms.

The most powerful learning experiences come from collaboration with others. We need others to get ideas from, add our own spin to it, and create something new and innovative. Sometimes in the profession of teaching, teachers can feel like they are in silos. Connections with those in your field are vital to growing as an educator. You can make connections with other educators and get inspired with new ideas from attending relevant conferences. One of my goals for the future is to attend and present at 1 conference per year. I would be interested in gaining more knowledge in the realm of online education, so the conferences I am most interested in would be the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) or Digital Learning Annual Conference (DLAC). At a conference, I would be able to share what I am doing in my classroom as well as learn from others who are experts in the field. I would then be able to continue growing my professional learning network by connecting with those I met via Twitter so that we could keep the conversation and collaboration going long after the conference ends.

Remember that little girl I mentioned before with all the questions? She always dreamed of getting a PhD someday. That dream is still alive and well in my soul. All my years of formal education have slowly been keeping that dream ignited. During my master’s program, I have learned to lead myself as a learner, educator, and person. Through this journey, I have realized that I have the skills and determination to lead other educators. My last goal for the future is to get an Ed.D in Educational Administration from Michigan State University. In order to be able to lead others at a high level, I will need to further my formal education so that I can be an effective leader.

Finding the path I want to take for my future was not easy. It was only through reflecting on what I am truly passionate about in the world of education that has led me to define these goals for my future. The first two goals I have set will help me improve my leadership skills, culminating in my final goal of pursuing an Ed.D. While I will have many professional goals over the years, the one thing that I know for certain is that I will always be asking questions and have an insatiable thirst for knowledge.
